Balm by Design was born from Jamie’s inspiration to make herbal medicine and reconnect with the healing rhythms of the natural world. What began as a personal exploration into plant-based wellness has blossomed into a deeper practice of growing, crafting, and learning from the land. Within her permaculture food forest, Jamie cultivates a diverse array of medicinal herbs, such as calendula, chamomile, sage, and echinacea, each chosen for its beauty, purpose, and restorative power. Through mindful cultivation and small-batch creations, she transforms these plants into natural balms, teas, and tinctures that reflect her belief that healing and creativity are rooted in the same place requiring care, curiosity, and connection.

Jamie
Jamie Smith is a designer, artist, herbalist, and educator whose work intertwines creativity, ecology, and holistic living. As the founder of Balm by Design, she creates artful, nature-based products and spaces that inspire connection, healing, and sustainability. Rooted in her passion for regenerative design, Jamie’s work extends from cultivating a thriving food forest to crafting herbal remedies and botanical inspired artworks that reflect the harmony between people and plants.
With over 20 years of experience as an art teacher, including the past two years leading an innovative STEAM program, Jamie has dedicated her career to helping students explore creativity through technology, design thinking, and environmental awareness. Her classroom has always been a place where science meets art, and curiosity fuels invention.
Beyond her teaching and herbal practice, Jamie continues to pursue her love of pattern and surface design. Her digital artwork and textile designs are available through her Spoonflower shop, offering a glimpse into her deep appreciation for organic forms, texture, and balance.
Through Balm by Design and her ongoing creative work, Jamie invites others to explore how art, nature, and mindful design can coexist beautifully, cultivating wellness, wonder, and connection in everyday life.
